Does Sacred Feminine = Feminism?

The thought occurs to me that one of the usual quips of those who oppose the remembrance of the Sacred Feminine is that it's 'just another form of Feminism' ('One of THOSE ...'). I think that's supposed to be an insult, for the thin-skinned, anyway. But there we are, with another excellent and provocative question.

Does being a champion -- a child of -- the Sacred Feminine or Divine Feminine mean that you're a 'feminist'?

For me, personally, being an awakening voice of the Sacred Feminine is to be amongst the real 'pro life' movement, as opposed to the one that pretends to be pro-life but is actually an 'anti' movement.

The Sacred Feminine, on the other hand, is by its very nature all about remembering the sacredness, being passionate about the dignity deserved by all beings, and experiencing the awe and reverence, of the very force of life that streams in, through, between, and amongst all things.

That means a recognition that goes beyond any specific 'ism' -- beyond Feminism, but inclusive of it; beyond animal rights, but inclusive of it; beyond human rights, but inclusive of it; beyond environmental stewardship, but inclusive of it. And yes, beyond honoring the Sacred Masculine, and it as it appears in men, but inclusive of it.

And the Sacred Feminine, being oriented as it is in synthesis, wholeness, and unity, has no interest whatsoever in marginalizing the Masculine, but rather guiding it to wholeness -- to a reflection of its own Sacredness.

So that's my answer to 'Does the Sacred Feminine Equal Feminism'. It's a 'Yes, and..." not a 'Yes, period."

The lady with the snakes coming out of her head

After chatting with a male friend, who said, "The sacred feminine scares the shit out of men", I, being ever so curious, did a Google search with the phrase "Why does the sacred feminine scare men". Because as far as I can see, the sacred feminine scares the shit out of some women, too. Harsh patriarchy doesn't go renegade without the assistance of patriarchy supporting women (and lots and lots of fear to keep everyone else quiet as little church mice).

But I digress. Back to why the sacred feminine scares the bejeezus out of people. As with all such spontaneous questions, this one leads to some interesting places.

I found my way to a blog by a young woman who was yearning for knowledge of 'some ass-kicking girl gods' -- a phrase that I seriously love! It gives me hope. Of course, I left her a few shining breadcrumbs, so that her search may be fruitful and multiply.

And I also wandered through the blog, and then the web site, for Christians for Biblical Equality. Given that most people on the planet these days identify Christians, and particularly American Christians, with glazy-eyed, frothy-mouthed, trigger-happy crazy people who've had their hearts fossilized and their tolerance-genes removed, I'm delighted to help direct some traffic to organizations like CBE. They're not the only ones, either (another of my posts, in my Engaged Spirituality blog, includes a link to other evangelicals who think it's a good idea not to wreck the planet or send people off to die without a pretty good reason, and other 'progressive' ideas).

But one of my favorites among the sites my search revealed is called "The Lady with the Snakes Coming Out of her Head." That would be Medusa, who, for the most part, was another example of Divine Chicks ending up with a bad reputation. Medusa, for those who are interested in how much things change (and will change again, thank god/dess), originally meant 'sovereign female wisdom.' As far as I'm concerned, the reason that the sacred feminine -- meaning the very topic -- scares people is because there remains a huge degree of ignorance. No, I'm not saying people are stupid, though it would be hard to argue that some people aren't. I'm saying that we've had centuries ... generations ... of indoctrination that surfaces as fear of the Feminine aspect of Divinity.

It's one of the best reasons to seek, and share, more of an understanding about what the Sacred Feminine means (including in her Dark Mother or Dark Goddess aspects); and by doing so help dismantle some of our own barriers to wholeness while also 'rippling out' into the continuum a more whole, and healing, perspective that might just help save the planet and Her many passengers.
