Yes, it's nearing Election Time again in the United States, in case you haven't noticed by the sudden flurry of crises, reminders that we should be afraid and distrustful, and press conferences about the need for legislation that actually helps people, Nature, and other pressing issues. Welcome to politics.
In fact, God Talk is at an all-time frenzy amongst politicians, but as Emerson said, "Your actions speak so loudly, I can't hear what you say." At least that's the case for those with eyes to see and ears to hear.
All conscious spiritual and philosophical traditions include 'virtues to live by', and they all center around Love (in the highest definition of the word), compassion, loving-kindness, integrity, social justice, forgiveness, nonviolence, the protection of Nature, tolerance, discernment, and other such qualities. I'm not making this list up; go look in the Bible, the Gita, the Quran, the wisdom of Buddha or Lao Tzu, and others. All call us to our higher potentials, individually and collectively.
None, in the heart of their traditions, advise hatred, intolerance, violence, lying, cruelty, greed, apathy, stealing, ignoring our neighbor's need, wrecking the environment, delegating our responsibility, and so on. In fact, all speak against such things.
As we approach the political season here in the U.S., let's practice 'conscious political involvement' as a form of engaged spirituality, in a way that reflects the finer virtues of our spiritual or philosophical tradition. Be discerning, engage in civil discourse, do your homework to 'see with new eyes' and 'hear with new ears' to ensure that what's being said by the politicans matches the reality or track-record of what's been — and is being — done in your name.
There are several excellent resources to assist you, regardless of your spiritual or political perspective. These are just a few that focus on integrity centered civic engagement and political policy that is aligned with the universal spiritual virtues.
** PR Watch (published by The Center for Media & Democracy)
** Source Watch (a project of The Center for Media & Democracy)
** The Network of Spiritual Progressives
** The National Association of Evangelicals - which published the 2004 Call to Civic Responsibility
** Marcus Borg's article on Faith & Politics, at Explore Faith, a wonderful, resource-rich site for those 'on the path'.
** The Shambhala Path of Social Engagement (a gathering 'pod' at Zaadz.com)
There is much at stake, and the need for truly integrity centered and visionary leadership in the U.S. and throughout the world is enormous. Your heartful involvement and interest can make a difference.
So turn it on, turn it up, get aware, and vote your conscience — and your heart — as if future generations were going to hold you responsible for the results. They are. What will your legacy be?
Until next time, I'm wishing you very well!
Sincerely,
Jamie
